It’s an arrangement that works to everyone’s advantage: as prices for contemporary art rise, it’s a way to defray costs while allowing a wider public to see significant work. Now the Lipman Family Foundation has gone one better. It has given a seminal sculpture by David Smith jointly to the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, N.Y. The Lipman family has long ties with both institutions. Howard Lipman was a generous benefactor and trustee at Storm King and the Whitney before his death in 1992, and his wife, Jean, who died in 1998, was an editor of Art in America and a curator at the Whitney.
